St John's Pro-Cathedral - 1843

St John the Apostle and Evangelist

Erected in 1843 is the oldest existing church in Perth. It was the Pro-Cathedral of the first two Catholic Bishops in Perth, Bishop John Brady and Bishop Joseph Serra O.S.B.
This humble church was Perth's first Cathedral until St Mary's was opened in 1865.
The Sisters of Mercy opened their first school here, thereafter it served as the convent chapel, then as a school and music room.
Restored in 1977, but badly needs restoring again.

Built in 1859 and extended and converted in Classical Italian style by architect M. C. Cavanagh, in the late 1920s and in 1930s the Church Office was added to the eastern end.
Heritage listed.

The Deanery - 1859

The Deanery

The Deanery is on the site where The Old Perth Gaol used to stand. Built in Romantic Gothic English Cottage style, designed by Rev. George Purvis Pownall a graduate of Cambridge and R. R. Jewell the Colonial Clerk of Works. Originally linked with the first Church of St.George by a large garden with trellises full of grapes, fruits and flowers. All bricks were hand made and wood hand sawn.
Built in 1859.

St Mary's Cathedral (Officially: Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary)

Constructed in three main phases, the first phase completed in 1865, designed by Brother Joseph Ascione in the Norman Gothic style, the second in 1930, designed by Architect Michael Cavanagh in the Academic Gothic style, the third in 1999 to 2009 (costing $32.9 million) was overseen by the Dean of the Cathedral, Monsignor Thomas McDonald, the remains of Perth's first Bishops were found beneath floorboards in the aisle, marked only by a small cross carved in the boards, a permanent crypt was constructed underneath the altar, and the remains of Perth's first Bishop John Brady were exhumed from his grave in France and also laid to rest in the crypt.

TRINITY CHURCH (old original Congregational Church) built in 1865, behind the newer Trinity Church at 72 St George's Tce.
The old Trinity Church is one of the oldest churches standing and was designed by Richard Roach Jewell, and W. Buggins was the contractor for the "handmade" bricks in the Flemish bond pattern, and T. Smith had the contract for the woodwork, the foundation stone was laid by Governor Hampton 1st May 1864. The chapel is of the decorated style of Gothic architecture, and is built of brick, with stone dressings. It is 54ft long and 34ft wide within, and 24ft high to the wall plates. The front is divided into three compartments by bold projecting buttresses, which are finished with spirals terminating with balls, that were intended to have been sculptured, but omitted for want of stone carvers. The entire height is 70ft. Between the front buttresses there is a large central stone window, divided into three lights, which is 10ft high to the springing, and having a large high-pointed head, filled with gracefully flowing tracery. Under this window there is the principal door or double entrance to the chapel, which will admit the worshipers to the porch, through which they will pass, right and left, to the seats. On each side of the buttresses in the front there is a shorter two-light window. The sides of the chapel are each divided into five bays, by well proportioned buttresses that correspond with those placed diagonally at the corners of the building. Within each bay there is a tall lancet-head single-light window. These rest upon a string-course moulding, which runs all round the building. The interior arrangements are simple and complete. No room is lost in any part of the chapel. The seats are divided into a double row in the middle and a single row on each side. They are 2ft 10ins apart, are all of a height, with solid open-ends, and square-headed trefoil tops; the backs of the seats are capped with fleur-de-lis. The pulpit, or officiating platform, has a very chaste and pleasing appearance, the upper panels being finished, with tracery heads, and filled in with rich scarlet cloth. The timbers of the roof are moulded on the under side, with portions of the framing passing down the side walls, and supported by ornamented corbels or brackets built into the walls. The walls are stuccoed and jointed, to imitate stone. All the wood used is fine native mahogany, and oiled. The architect, Richard Jewell, Esq.; the builders Mr. Thomas Smith ; and Mr. William Buggins ; and the cost of the building £1400. It will comfortably accommodate 300 persons.
The Church was renovated this year 2014.

Wesley Church - 1870

Gothic Revival Style and designed by Richard Roach Jewell and built by William Buggins.
The brickwork is in the Flemish Bond style, an old copper weather cock has been perched high on the steeple since 1870.
Bricks made of local clay and floor of Jarrah, the church bell originally came from the sailing ship 'Tranby' which brought the original members of the congregation to the Colony.
The Meckering earthquake of 1968 caused structural damage to the steeple, the bell was removed and put on display below.
The total cost of the building was ₤3,000.
Heritage listed building.

Built in 1888, English Victorian Gothic Revival style cathedral architecturally designed by Edmund Thomas Blacket, the only example of his work in this State, and he died before completion of his work. Constructed of handmade bricks from clay from Queens Gardens and stone trimmings quarried at Rottnest Island, local jarrah roof trusses and arches, (the timber lay in the Swan River for two years to soften enough to be bent and carved), Oregon Pine ceiling inserts and ornamental inserts in beams are red deal, limestone from Fremantle, blue stone columns from Victoria, Marble from Italy, a Caen stone pulpit carved in France, beautiful stained glass, the Queen Victoria Memorial Bells were installed on the second anniversary of her death in 1903. The cost of the building was ₤18,000.
The St George's Cathedral has been fully restored.

Designed by Perth born Architect Henry Trigg, and the opening service was attended by Sir John and Lady Forrest.
Sir John Forrest proclaimed that "such a magnificent building would be an ornament to the principal street of the city."

Constructed of limestone, Victorian Romanesque and Tudor style built in 1895, designed by James Cavanagh and Michael Cavanagh, it is part of Mercedes College girl's school.

Built in 1907, architect James Hine, Federation Gothic style in red brick and sandstone.
Previously on this site was Dr Collie's cottage, the Colonial Surgeon in 1832.

Burt Memorial Hall - 1917

Burt Memorial Hall

Gifted by the Burt family in memory of their two sons that were killed in world war I, and constructed in the Gothic Revival style, designed by Herbert Parry son of the second Bishop of Perth.
The foundation stone was laid by Lord Forrest in 1917.
To make way for the building of Burt Memorial Hall an old bungalow building with steep roof and long verandahs, which housed military officers, had stood on the site for many years was demolished.

Built in 1935 by Architect Charles Oldham, Harold Boas and Ednie Brown, Builder F. J. Deacon and Co. Red brick and tile.
Classified by the National Trust.

Built in 1936, Inter-War Gothic style. Stone work came from Darlington, the Altar from an earlier Church in Fitzgerald St, Perth, and the Pulpit from a demolished Church in Fremantle.

Architect on the extentions in 2018 was Ron Bodycoat.

2018 received a Heritage grant to continue conservation.
